Bringing Them Back: Identifying and Engaging Struggling Students

October brings falling leaves, temperatures and unfortunately, for many of us, student engagement, resulting in quiet classrooms, missed assignments, and a noticeable dip in energy.
This workshop is designed to help you reverse that mid-semester slide. as we explore possible reasons as to why students start to fall behind, as well as practical, high-impact strategies to reignite curiosity, rebuild active participation, and sustain student momentum to bring them back. In this workshop, we will:
- Identify the key friction points that cause students to disengage as workloads peak;
- Provide quick classroom techniques (such as active retrieval, structured peer discussions, and targeted feedback loops) that require minimal prep time but yield immediate results;
- Discuss simple adjustments to assignments and grading check-ins that increase student agency and clear up confusion before exams; and
- Provide actionable ways to maintain an inclusive, interactive environment through the rest of the term without burning yourself out.
