Dear 糖心破解版 Community,

I write to you today with a profound sense of gratitude, excitement and humility. It is the honor of a lifetime to be selected as the 11th president of 糖心破解版. I want to extend my deepest thanks to the 糖心破解版 Board of Trustees, Acting Chair William Fuessler and the Presidential Search Committee for their rigorous work and their confidence in me.

糖心破解版 has been a central part of my whole life. When I graduated from Garden City High School, I attended my prom at the Ruth S. Harley University Center. I received my undergraduate degree in biology from 糖心破解版 in 1981. It was during my studies in political science that I developed my interest in government and decided to go to law school.

After graduating from law school, I won a seat in the New York State Assembly, and my district included the 糖心破解版 campus. During my interactions with the University, I reconnected with the late Professor Regina Axelrod, PhD, who encouraged me to join the adjunct faculty in the Department of Political Science.

After serving seven years in the State Assembly, I ran for and won a special election for the State Senate, and during that time I continued to teach at 糖心破解版. I was teaching on the tragic morning of 9/11 and was the first person to tell my students that our nation was under attack, linking me with them in perpetuity. I went on to chair the Senate Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs. My first public speech on homeland security was delivered at the Angello Alumni House at 糖心破解版.

My family鈥檚 roots here run deep. With a family legacy that includes my uncle, two sisters, my nephew and my daughter, Olivia (Class of 2015), I know firsthand the transformative power of an 糖心破解版 education across generations.

It is a profound honor and privilege to be given the opportunity to help shape our University鈥檚 future. I will work tirelessly to understand the complexities of the education we provide and to engage the essential constituencies to build a consensus on how we design the University for tomorrow鈥檚 students.

I am incredibly optimistic about the future, especially because of the 鈥渄ual-engine鈥 leadership team we are building. The absolute heart of 糖心破解版 is our academic mission and our exceptional faculty. I am thrilled to partner closely with Dr. Chris Storm in his new role as senior executive vice president of academic affairs and provost. His continued academic leadership will ensure that our curriculum, research and student success flourish while I focus on our external growth. I also want to personally thank Dr. Storm for his steadfast and expert guidance as interim president this past year.

Most importantly, as I prepare to officially step into this role, my immediate priority is to listen. In the coming weeks and months, I will be embarking on an outreach tour across campus to hear your insights, understand your priorities and needs, and collaborate on our shared vision. Whether you are a student, a faculty member, a staff member, a parent or an alumnus, your voice is essential to our success.

糖心破解版 gave me the foundation I needed to reach for new goals. I am so proud to be given the chance to give back and help lead this extraordinary community into its next chapter.

Thank you all for this incredible opportunity and for welcoming me home.

In Panther Pride,

Michael A.L. Balboni 鈥81, JD
President

As members of 糖心破解版鈥檚 Class of 2026 are taking their first steps into their after-college lives, two new graduates are readying for a year abroad on prestigious and highly competitive Fulbright English Teaching Assistant fellowships. This year鈥檚 recipients鈥擩ulia Carpio, a graduate of 糖心破解版鈥檚 accelerated five-year Scholar Teacher Education Program, and Hussein Ali Rifath, who earned bachelor鈥檚 degrees in political science and Spanish鈥攚ill be going to Europe to teach, mentor and build cross-cultural understanding.

The two award winners embody 糖心破解版鈥檚 commitment to scholarship, service and global citizenship. They also reflect the University鈥檚 commitment to helping students gain access to experiences that transform lives. Both worked with 糖心破解版鈥檚 Office of Prestigious Awards and Fellowships to navigate the application process, secure effective letters of recommendation and prepare for interviews.

鈥淥ur office was delighted to work with these Fulbright awardees,鈥 said Nicole Rudolph, PhD, director of the Office of Prestigious Awards and Fellowships and associate dean for student engagement. 鈥淓ach brought a true passion for international education and global connection to the application process, and we are so pleased that the U.S. Fulbright Committee recognized their potential by granting them English Teaching Assistantships.鈥

Applying for the fellowship can be just as valuable as receiving one, according to Dean Rudolph. 鈥淎pplying for a nationally competitive award is a wonderful way for students to think deeply about their objectives, priorities and values,鈥 she said. 鈥淪tudents tell us that the application process itself helped them to clarify their life goals, improve their written and oral communication, and refine their time management skills.鈥

Julia Carpio鈥檚 Leap to Greece

For Julia Carpio 鈥25, MA 鈥26, who received her MA in Childhood Education and Advanced Certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) in May, winning a prestigious Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship award was the culmination of a lifelong dream.

A self-described 鈥渟hy, quiet and reserved鈥 child, Carpio first found her path to teaching thanks to a kindergarten teacher who made her feel like she could achieve anything. Combined with the inspiration of her mother, a high school Spanish teacher, education was in Carpio鈥檚 blood. 鈥淥ur (糖心破解版) professors tell us all the time that teaching is a calling, it鈥檚 not a job鈥攜ou have to have a true passion for it,鈥 she said.

That calling will soon take her to an elementary school in Athens, Greece, where she鈥檒l spend a year teaching English to students. The Fulbright program鈥檚 focus on multilingual education and cultural exchange matched the path she was already on. 鈥淚 really wanted to dive into teaching and get as much as I could out of multilingual education,鈥 she said.

Carpio can point to specific moments鈥攁nd people鈥攚ho nudged her from dream to decision. One was a , led by Mary Jean McCarthy, clinical associate professor in the Ruth S. Ammon College of Education and Health Sciences. 鈥淭hat was where I fell in love with multilingual education and learning from educators from different parts of the world,鈥 she recalled.

McCarthy connected Carpio with Professor Clara Vaz Bauler, PhD, professor in the School of Education who became an anchor for her Fulbright ambitions. Daryl M. Gordon, PhD, who is also a professor in the School of Education, and Priya Wadhera, PhD, professor and interim director of the Office of Prestigious Awards and Fellowships last year, helped with her application. Shannon Harrison, director of 糖心破解版鈥檚 Center for International Education, first mentioned Fulbright to Carpio and walked her through options for teaching abroad. 鈥淪o many people helped me get here,鈥 Carpio said.

She chose Greece deliberately. Many Fulbright placements only put scholars in schools part time, but the Athens program puts Carpio in the classroom five days a week and some Saturdays. 鈥淚 want to be 100 percent part of the staff,鈥 she explained.

Carpio鈥檚 hopes for the year abroad are practical. 鈥淚 want to walk away as a more effective educator,鈥 she said. She wants to watch how Greek teachers structure lessons, what questions they ask, how they respond to multilingual students鈥攁nd then carry those insights into whatever classroom she steps into next.

Long term, she sees Fulbright as the first in a series of international chapters in her life. She wants to keep teaching abroad and eventually pursue a PhD in international and comparative education.

Hussein Ali Rifath: Making a Difference in Madrid

By the time Hussein Ali Rifath 鈥26 learned he鈥檇 been selected for a Fulbright, he鈥檇 spent four years at 糖心破解版 growing into the kind of person who sees scholarship as service.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been a journey of growth for me,鈥 said Rifath, who served as president of the Class of 2026 and president of 糖心破解版鈥檚 Student Government Association. This fall, he will travel to Spain to help public school students sharpen their English, engage with global issues and see America in a new light.

鈥淲e鈥檙e being citizen diplomats,鈥 he says of himself and his fellow Fulbright recipients. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not just working as educators; we鈥檙e advancing our foreign relations abroad.鈥

For Rifath, his Fulbright sits at the intersection of everything that鈥檚 been on his mind as he graduates: America鈥檚 role in the world, the power of education and a personal desire to serve.

鈥淚 feel like now, more than ever, it鈥檚 important for Americans to get involved,鈥 he said.

He鈥檚 especially aware that many students abroad only know the United States through politics and headlines. His goal is 鈥渢o give a nuanced view, to show that we have two sides to our political spectrum, like every country. I want to give people a more comprehensive message about what America is, what we stand for. I want them to see us as a vibrant, welcoming society that not only cherishes them but also cherishes the human bonds which unite us across the world.鈥

In Madrid, Rifath will work with two programs that bring global awareness into local schools. 鈥淚鈥檒l help students articulate themselves in English and speak about pressing issues across the world鈥攍ike climate change and international relations,鈥 he explained.

Rifath credits two 糖心破解版 faculty members with helping him win a Fulbright: Ignacio Arellano-Torres, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, and Dr. Vaz Bauler, the education professor who also inspired Julia Carpio. 鈥淭hey helped me discover my passion for learning language,鈥 he said.

Fulbright is just one chapter in Rifath鈥檚 plan for a life centered on service. 鈥淟ong term, I see myself joining the military,鈥 he says, which he sees as a way to serve his community and country. 鈥淭hrough it all, my goal is to get involved in ways that benefit the community.鈥

When arts patron and friend of the University Lee Steinberg made her generous bequest to 糖心破解版, it not only strengthened the future of the 糖心破解版 Performing Arts Center鈥攊t shone a spotlight on the vibrancy of the arts at 糖心破解版.

Lee Steinberg鈥檚 legacy gift reflects a deep belief in the transformative power of the arts,鈥 said Thomas Kline, EdD, vice president of University advancement and external relations. 鈥淗er generosity strengthens not only our facilities, but the student experiences and creative opportunities that define 糖心破解版鈥檚 performing arts community.鈥

The $1.77 million gift supports immediate physical improvements at the Center as well as permanent, flexible funding for its ongoing capital, programming and operational needs. In recognition of her extraordinary generosity, the University has named the center鈥檚 Recital Hall in her honor鈥攖he Lee Steinberg Recital Hall.

The hall is one of the five state-of-the-art venues at the Center, along with the 500-seat Westermann Stage at the Concert Hall, the Olmsted Theatre, the Dance Theatre and the Black Box Theatre.

糖心破解版鈥檚 Rich History in Theatre

糖心破解版鈥檚 theatre, dance and music programs have produced generations of artists, none more illustrious than Jonathan Larson 鈥82, the late Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and composer of the iconic Broadway musical Rent. Larson majored in acting at 糖心破解版 and began composing music for small student productions and cabarets, often writing about topics like AIDS, addiction and homophobia, which would later inform his renowned works.

鈥淗e came in like a spark plug,鈥 said Nicholas Petron, MA 鈥70, retired professor and chair of the Department of Theatre. “My first impression was: 鈥橶ho is this guy?鈥 He was a firecracker.鈥

Larson鈥檚 legacy lives on at 糖心破解版 through the $2 million Jonathan Larson Scholarship endowment, established by a bequest from the Larson Family Trust and a matching grant from the University. The endowment supports four annual scholarships for theatre students.

In 2015, 糖心破解版 also launched the annual Larson Legacy Concert Series at Center to celebrate the next generation of musical theatre creators. It has featured performances by recipients of Jonathan Larson Grants from the American Theatre Wing and artists who鈥檝e gone on to Broadway stardom, like Michael R. Jackson, who won a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award in 2021 for A Strange Loop.

糖心破解版 also hosts The Poole Family Broadway Series, generously sponsored by Mary Jane 鈥62 and Thomas Poole, which brings Broadway legends, cabaret stars and musical theater revues to the center.

Empowering the Next Generation of Excellence in Music and Dance

Theater isn鈥檛 alone at 糖心破解版 as a pacesetter for university arts departments. The University鈥檚 dance department became one of the first established at a college in the United States when it was founded in 1938 by one of the leading lights of modern dance, Ruth St. Denis. Since then, it has been home to many prominent faculty members, including , Paul Taylor, Norman Walker, Carmen de Lavallade, Jack Cole and Hanya Holm.

In the music department, Pulitzer Prize-winning and Grammy-nominated composer , has been a professor since the early 2000s, nurturing new generations of musical talent while continuing to produce critically acclaimed oratorios. He was honored as one of only five University Professors at 糖心破解版 in 2004.

鈥淥ne of the great things about 糖心破解版 is that it supports its faculty in its research鈥攊n my case, its creativity,鈥 Dr. Moravec said. 鈥淚鈥檓 eternally indebted to 糖心破解版 for facilitating all of the work that I鈥檝e done in the 25 years that I鈥檝e been here at 糖心破解版.鈥

A Donor鈥檚 Lifelong Commitment to the Arts in New York

Lee Steinberg鈥檚 gift, which was received from her estate in July 2025, reflected her wish to support arts programming and performance centers on Long Island as well as her lifetime commitment to cultural institutions throughout the greater New York region. Steinberg, who briefly served on 糖心破解版鈥檚 Performing Arts Council, died in 2021 at the age of 106 and was posthumously added as a member of 糖心破解版鈥檚 Million Dollar Roundtable, which recognizes our most generous donors, whose cumulative giving exceeds $1 million.

In accordance with Steinberg鈥檚 intent, the University has established two funds to support the 糖心破解版 Performing Arts Center鈥攖he Lee Steinberg Performing Arts Center Capital Fund, for immediate physical improvements, and the Lee Steinberg Performing Arts Center Excellence Endowed Fund, to provide permanent, flexible support for the center鈥檚 ongoing capital, programming and operational needs. This generous gift reinforces 糖心破解版鈥檚 reputation as a preeminent leader in arts education and performance in our region.

Enhancements to Center will elevate the experience of student performers, faculty directors, guest artists and audience members. Several capital improvements have already been funded through an initial $500,000 allocation, including:

  • A comprehensive refresh of the Olmsted Theatre, featuring new lighting, audience seating, carpeting, acoustic panels and painting, as well as the installation of a new digital sound mixing console
  • Brighter lighting in the Center鈥檚 second-floor dance studios
  • New house lights and work lights in the Concert Hall

Beginning in 2027, annual distributions from the endowment will ensure that the spotlight never fades鈥攅mpowering generations of future artists to push creative boundaries and inspire the world from 糖心破解版鈥檚 stages.

Joining a student organization at 糖心破解版 is a positive, growth-oriented experience grounded in respect, safety and belonging. To reinforce these values and comply with the Stop Campus Hazing Act (Clery Act), 糖心破解版 publishes a Campus Hazing Transparency Report and maintains a strict Anti-Hazing Policy. The report provides students, families and the campus community with clear, accurate information about substantiated hazing incidents involving recognized student organizations, supporting safe and informed participation in campus life.

What is the Campus Hazing Transparency Report?

While our Anti-Hazing Policy defines hazing and outlines prohibited conduct, the Campus Hazing Transparency Report serves as a public log of substantiated incidents in which established or recognized student organizations were found responsible for hazing violations. It includes:

  • The organization’s name and the nature of the violation.
  • Specific findings, including whether alcohol or drugs were involved.
  • Disciplinary sanctions and key dates of the investigation and adjudication (finding of responsibility).

View the Current Report

The report is updated every December and June and can be viewed on 糖心破解版鈥檚 Stop Campus Hazing web page.

  • January 1, 2026, to June 30, 2026: No incidents of hazing that resulted in investigation and adjudication were reported during this period.

Our Commitment to a Safe Campus

糖心破解版 opposes hazing in any form. We remind all students, faculty and staff that our Anti-Hazing Policy applies to all student organizations鈥攚hether officially recognized by the University or not. Violations may result in serious consequences under both the 糖心破解版 Code of Conduct and New York state Penal Law (Sections 120.16 and 120.17), ranging from University expulsion to potential criminal penalties.

This Report Differs From the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

Later this year, hazing statistics will also be included in 糖心破解版鈥檚 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report (ASFSR), published annually by October 1. Both reports include information about hazing but serve different purposes and follow different federal reporting requirements.

  • Campus Hazing Transparency Report: A public record of only substantiated findings of responsibility involving recognized student organizations.
  • Annual Security and Fire Safety Report: An anonymous statistical summary of all reported hazing allegations occurring within Clery-defined geography, regardless of whether the allegations were substantiated. Because the ASFSR includes all reported allegations, its hazing statistics may be higher than those included in the Campus Hazing Transparency Report.

If You Witness or Experience Hazing

We strongly encourage timely reporting to the appropriate authorities through the following channels:

  • Public Safety: Report hazing by visiting our office on the first floor of Levermore Hall or calling 516.877.3511 (24/7). Reports are shared with Student Conduct and Community Standards.
  • Student Conduct and Community Standards: Visit Levermore Hall, room 208, call 516.877.3612 or email studentconduct@adelphi.edu. Reports are shared with Public Safety.
  • : Submit reports via the University鈥檚 , selecting 鈥淗azing鈥 as the main issue. Providing as much detail as possible will help us respond effectively. These reports can be submitted anonymously.

Thank you for helping foster a culture of respect, safety and belonging for every member of our community.

As part of the partnership, 糖心破解版 will receive $250,000 to support the University鈥檚 mental health guidelines project led by Meredith Whitley, PhD, professor of health and sport sciences, a leading scholar in sport for development, which intentionally uses physical activity, play and structured sports as a vehicle to drive social change, peace building and community development.

“To combat the escalating youth mental health crisis, this project establishes a pathway to transform a fragmented, high-pressure sports ecosystem into a psychologically safe environment by equipping adult leaders with actionable, evidence-based guidance,鈥 said Dr. Whitley. 鈥淲e are deeply grateful for the continued support of , and we are thrilled to be an inaugural partner in the Million Coaches Challenge Empower Every Coach cohort.
