Recent accomplishments by Political Science professors.
Regina S. Axelrod hasÌýbeen continuing her research on theÌýnuclear renaissance for the upcoming 4th edition of her co-editedÌýbook, GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT: LAW,ÌýINSTITUTION, and POLICY. She was the invited lecturer forÌý“Environmental Policy in the CzechÌýRepublic,â€� graduate governmentÌýprogram at the University of HigherÌýEconomics, Prague Czech Republic,ÌýOctober 30, 2012.
Michael Balboni foundedÌýRedland Strategies Inc., a full-serviceÌýbusiness development and government relations firm that specializesÌýin crisis communication, homelandÌýsecurity, risk management, mediaÌýrelations, marketing, thought leaderÌýship, disaster recovery and operations and strategic planning. In addition, Professor Balboni was appointed to the New York State RespondsÌýCommission. This commission isÌýtasked with finding ways to ensureÌýthat New York State is ready toÌýrespond to future weather-relatedÌýdisasters.
Margaret Gray recently received the ÌÇÐÄÆÆ½â°æ chapterÌýof Omicron Delta Kappa’s AcademicÌýAdvisor Award. She is preparing forÌýtwo conferences this semester, theÌýLatin American Studies AssociationÌýCongress and the Labor and Employment Relations AssociationÌýConference, where she will discussÌýher research on Hudson ValleyÌýfarm workers. In addition, ProfessorÌýGray was interviewed for a WNYCÌý(NYC’s NPR affiliate) broadcastÌýabout New York State farm workers.
Katie Laatikainen’sÌý491 page book The European UnionÌýand International Institutions: Performance, Policy, Power (co-edited withÌýKnud Erik Joergensen, Aarhus University, Denmark) was published byÌýRoutledge in January 2013. She hasÌýjust signed a contract to produce aÌýtwo volume, 60 chapter Sage Handbook of European Foreign Policy together with several co-editors inÌýEurope. During spring 2013, Professor Laatikainen will present aÌýpaper “Empires of Humanity: Paternalism of the US and the EU inÌýGlobal Politics” (co-author LisbethÌýAggestam at the University of Bath,ÌýUK) at the International StudiesÌýConference in San Francisco inÌýApril. At that conference she willÌýalso participate in a round table onÌýTeaching International OrganizationÌýat chair a panel on IO Performance. In May, ProfessorÌýLaatikainen will present her paperÌý“Making a Splash or Roiling the Waters: The Impact of the Lisbon Treaty for the EU at the UN” at the European Union Studies AssociationÌýconference in Baltimore. She hasÌýalso been invited as a keynoteÌýspeaker on the Euro-crisis by a PiÌýSigma Alpha Colloquium at the University of Bridgeport in April.
Traci Levy is serving asÌýInterim Chairperson of the PoliticalÌýScience Department, Director ofÌýthe Gender Studies minor, and theÌýdepartment’s representative to theÌýFaculty ÌýSenate. She also continuesÌýto work with the CollaborationÌýProject, focusing on communityÌýbuilding at ÌÇÐÄÆÆ½â°æ while working onÌýsocial justice issues. This summer,Ìýshe will begin research for an articleÌýmanuscript examining how the creation of “military caregiver leaveâ€�Ìýsignificantly extends those eligibleÌýfor work-related leave under FamilyÌý& Medical Ìýleave Act (FMLA) andÌýaffects the state’s role in definingÌýand recognizing families.
Hugh A.ÌýWilson received the Arthur L.ÌýGalub Award for The Best Paper byÌýa Faculty Member, “The Framers,Ìýthe Constitution and the Origins ofÌýAmerican Political economy,â€� whichÌýwas presented at the New YorkÌýState Political Science Association’sÌýAnnual Ìýconference, Albany, 2012.
Dr. Danielle Zach earned herÌýdoctorate from the CUNY Graduate Center on February 1. She isÌýcurrently the lead researcher on aÌýproject analyzing the internationalÌýresponse to maritime Ìýpiracy off theÌýcoast of Somalia. In addition, she is aÌýsenior researcher at the RalphÌýBunche Institute for InternationalÌýStudies, where she is engaged on issues of global governance, particularly in the area of internationalÌýpeace and security. She recentlyÌýpresented a paper at the 2012ÌýNortheastern Political Science Association (NPSA) on Irish America andÌýthe Northern Ireland conflict, whichÌýis part of a broader research agendaÌýon the role of diasporas and civilÌýwars.
